Декоративно-прикладное искусство является неотъемлемой частью культуры. Оно выражается в различных пластических, художественных образах, которые имеют свое семантическое значение, характерное только для них.
Фантазия художника искала соответствий в событиях и явлениях материального мира. Образ-уподобление возникал на основе сходства, обобщая многие значения и представления, связываемые с этим мотивом, он перерастал в символ.
Изображаемый образ то обобщается до символа, включая новые значения, то снижается до бытового наблюдения, не утрачивая окончательно в этих колебаниях основу мотива. Переходя в орнаментальные изображения, многие символы исконно имели глубокое смысловое значение.
Тема плодородия ассоциировалась с женским началом. Недаром, образ «мать-сыра-земля» представлял собой изображение женщины с воздетыми руками. Часто подобные черты встречаются в северо-двинских росписях по дереву и в промыслах строче-вышивки практически повсеместно.
Тема Солнца является главной в народном искусстве во все времена. Цветок рисуется по образу Солнца. Он связан как бы с большим пространством, хотя и украшает порой поверхность маленькой вещи. Солярный круг на дне чаши или на выпуклой стороне половника поэтизируется мастером. Он превращен в лучистое сияние в виде цветка, переходящее в пучки трав, и в следующем круге – в травы стелющиеся, растущие. В одном изображении могут совмещаться как бы два представления, два понятия, связанные с землей и небом.
Образ спорыньи – двойного или тройного плода на одном стебле – символизирует прибыль, удачу. Все это говорит об отношении народа к растительной силе, о восприятии им художественного образа цветущих трав как источника добра и радости.
Эти образы по традиции удерживались в народном искусстве, поскольку были связаны с коренными понятиями народа, хотя содержание их и функции перестраивались на протяжении времени.
Так мотивы благоденствия, процветания переносились на предметы, окружавшие человека, участвовали в событиях его жизни, создавали его среду.
